Ultrasound is an imaging technique that uses sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Sometimes referred to as sonography, it is used to help diagnose the causes of pain, swelling and infection in the body’s internal organs in addition to the widely known use of examining pregnant women to determine the gestational age of the fetus. Ultrasound can also be used to help guide biopsies, diagnose heart conditions, and assess the extremities for blood clots in the veins. Ultrasound imaging is noninvasive and does not require the use of any radiation so it is a safe form of diagnostic testing with minimal risk or complication.
