Spirometry is a common office test used to assess how well your lungs work. Spirometry which is also commonly known as a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) measures how much air you inhale, how much you exhale, and how quickly that is done. This pulmonary test is used to diagnose asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions that affect breathing. It is also used to evaluate a worker’s respiratory health in medical surveillance programs and to screen workers for their ability to perform certain tasks. . Spirometry results can play a central role in decisions about job assignments and personal protective equipment for workers as well as in the assessment of exposure-related health effects.
